We (Me and my Wife) Started from Bangalore to Kumily (KSRTC) Bus, We boarded the bus @ 9:00 pm and we reached Kumily @ 8: 00 am (On the way a scenic view of Cumbum High way and the uphill of periyar was wonderful).
We took a rickshaw from Kumily bus stand to Hotel Ambady. We paid Rs.20/-. We were welcomed by the Ambady staff, they were courteous and very happy to help you I got a cottage and took some and refreshed our selves had our breakfast @ the hotel.
We walked out of our hotel and walked towards the boating region Thekkady but it was a long distance we took a rickshaw and paid Rs.50/-, and in the entry we need to pay Rs.25/- each for the entrance. It was a wonderful place (Beware of Monkeys). We need to walk a stretch of the forest are to reach the boating point. The place was wonderful and silent we went and booked our ticket for the 2 o clock boat ride and we had a lot of time, so we went to the cafeteria which was fully fenced to avoid the monkeys( there were monkeys every where ) we bought some Kerala chips with some ice cream and were waiting for our time.
@ 2 we boarded the Boat in the upper deck; they provided us the life jacket and we started our journey hoping to sight some animals, but to our luck we could spot only 2 to 3 sambar deers, few kingfishers, 2 white Strokes , many cormorants with there nests and nestlings, and a Elephant gazing Uphill at a far distance. While returning to the base we saw a herd of sambar (then we came to know that to sight more animals we have to go the last trip or early morning trip for boat ride) Tip: be exactly @ 2 pm to get the tickets for 3:15 boat ride.
Then we headed back and we took a rickshaw and driver name was Jeeva (9946046106). He helped us a lot in Kumily; he took us Kathakali shows, Kalari fights many places where we got a decent discount.
The next day jeeva took us from the hotel to Elephant Safari which was discounted, we climbed on a female elephant (BHADRA) who took us on her back in to the plantations and we also bought the elephants hair( In India it is considered as a good luck to keep elephant Tail Hair).Next we went to Spice garden visit, it was an amazing Experience we saw so many useful herbs and medicinal plants and they explained us about every plant and then we went for shopping to place called lords spices where bought most of the oils, aroma oils, spices etc for lesser prices.
Then we went to purchase the government Gavi forest Trekking Pass, we bought the tickets from there Rs.1000/- per person. And we spoke to a jeep driver with the help of jeeva. (Jeep cost ranges between – 1500- 2500). And then again we went a south Indian hotel were we found the normal rice food and it was tasty. We enjoyed the meal and went for shopping to a whole sale Store in (we got all the items cheaper than any place in Kumily).Headed back to room and relaxed the whole evening enjoying the scenic vie of the resort. And we had to wake up early for the jungle safari.
@ 4:30 am we woke up and got freshened up and we vacated the room and kept our luggage in the reception and the jeep cam @ 5:30 am(Driver Sojan). He drove to the vandi periyar forest division (1 hr drive) we reached the check post and we need to pay Rs.25/- per person and camera Rs.25/- and jeep fare Rs.50/-(Paid by the driver). The trip started in the jungle and there where many jeeps our first sight was a herd of wild Indian Bison’s and next was a herd of elephants, we founded a tusker in the herd, we where excited to see the sight, they just walked up hill from the road. Then we founded some Malabar squirrels, small Indian grey hornbill, Nilgiri Langurs and we reached the Gavi forest office @ 8:30 am. We were welcomed by the forest guards and we were given an acknowledgement after filling our details and had our breakfast and we were ready for trekking, we had a family (with 2 small kids) accompanying us to the trek. Our Forest Guide Mr.Palaniswamy accompanied us. He offered us Leach socks and we started to walk and it was a wonderful location we walked the uphill and reached the highest peak in Gavi forest. It was wonderful sight and we relaxed for some and watched the scenic beauty of the Nature, we could hear the waterfall sound and sounds of the Nilgiri langur. It was an amazing trek and then we went down hill and started walking back, luckily there was a jeep which was coming back, and they dropped us back to the forest office. From there the guard took us to the paddle boat ride to the water falls. We reached the water fall and wow it was wonderful the natural waterfall it was cold and clean, we took some snaps and headed back and had our lunch. And left Gavi thanking Mr.Palaniswamy.
There are many options including stay, bamboo rafting, Sabarimala (Holy Place in Kerala) view point and many other options.
Tip: Please take a very good camera and a Binocular, Adhere to the guide never wander alone in the jungle.
On way back from Gavi we spotted few Nilgiri langurs, Malabar giant Squirrels and we reached hotel by 5:30 pm, and we took our luggage and headed towards the bus stand and boarded the bus @ 7:00 pm and came back to Bangalore.
